HydroTurf® Makes LA DOTD Approved Materials List

HydroTurf Approved in Three Categories for Stabilization and Erosion Control

Atlanta, GA – January 8, 2019 – Watershed Geo announced today that its engineered synthetic turf revetment system, HydroTurf, has been selected by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) as an approved product on their materials list for both construction and maintenance.  HydroTurf was also endorsed by The Water Institute of the Gulf and Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) as part of the Coastal Innovation Partnership Program for structural protection of levees.

The technology was approved following a successful demonstration in Morgan City, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, where HydroTurf outperformed rock riprap during a new product evaluation process. Funded jointly by St. Mary Parish and CPRA, the project is part of an overall levee-heightening and improvement initiative and a post-Hurricane Katrina effort to improve storm surge and hurricane protection in South Louisiana.

The selection of HydroTurf is also supported by comprehensive testing at Colorado State University (CSU) Hydraulics Laboratory.  CSU has the largest flumes for hydraulic testing in the world.  HydroTurf did not reach failure at a maximum steady state overtop velocity of 40 feet/second and for 13 hours in the wave overtop simulator being subjected to a generic five-hundred-year event for the New Orleans region.

“We are pleased HydroTurf has been approved by the Louisiana DOTD,” said Brad Cooley, Vice President of Civil Applications. “We look forward to demonstrating the value of HydroTurf as an effective long-term solution for erosion control and structural armoring at many sites in Louisiana.”

The product was approved by the Louisiana DOTD for both construction and maintenance in three categories: stabilizing materials, erosion-control products and roadside treatment materials.

Designed specifically for applications such as levees, dams, drainage channels, shorelines and banks, steep slopes, downchutes, bridge abutments and landscaping, HydroTurf serves to protect hydraulic structures from erosion against high velocity flows.  HydroTurf is an engineered revetment system comprised of a structured geomembrane, engineered synthetic turf and a high strength cementitious infill. It is a permanent armoring system that can be rapidly installed by the Department of Transportation crews since it is light-weight and requires only small equipment.  Long-term maintenance is virtually eliminated because the use of synthetic turf eliminates mowing, seeding, and weed control.  Also, there is no need to replace displaced or sunken rock or cracked concrete.  The system is flexible and designed to withstand settlement while providing year-round roadside aesthetics.
