Prince Geroge’s County government is the owner of twenty high and significant hazard dams. They are responsible for the routine monitoring, inspection, and maintenance of these dams. The twenty dams each have an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) to reduce the risk of human life and injury, and to minimize property damage during an unusual emergency event.
Summerfield Pond No. 1 is a part of crucial infrastructure designed for flood risk reduction in the Northampton area. The earthen dam was constructed in 1994 and was rated as having a high hazard potential after 2022 inspection. To address this concern, Prince George’s County Clean Water Partnership, in collaboration with Watershed Geo, implemented HydroTurf® – an MDE Dam Safety accepted hard armor revetment to provide permanent erosion protection.
Construction began in May 2025, with over 60% of the work completed by midsummer. Now fully installed, the HydroTurf system provides long-term embankment stability and armoring of the downstream side of the dam. This project reflects a growing commitment to engineered solutions—building stronger, more resilient critical infrastructure that protect both communities and the environment.
