Goodlette-Frank Road Ditch Improvements

Naples, FL

Collier County Stormwater Management installed HydroTurf® as an engineered solution to many existing issues facing Goodlette-Frank Road in Naples, Florida. Due to the large volume of rainfall and tropical storms that affect the state of Florida, erosion and flooding are frequent concerns. HydroTurf was chosen as a hard armor solution for this road-side ditch to stabilize the West Bank. The benefits of HydroTurf enhanced the conveyance capacity of stormwater flow through the Gordon River Basin to the receiving waters of Naples Bay, which reduces flooding in adjacent residential and commercial developments.

Before the installation of the HydroTurf, the existing vegetation in the ditch was poorly maintained, causing unsightly overgrowth in this well-traveled area. HydroTurf eliminated the need for mowing and regular maintenance, in addition to being aesthetically pleasing year-round.

This project was also designed to provide an adequate flood protection level of service for this area against a twenty-five (25) year, three (3) day storm event. Even after the extreme weather during hurricane Ian, among other significant weather events, the HydroTurf remains in place and undamaged.

HydroTurf® is an engineered revetment solution designed to provide armoring of hydraulic structures against high velocity and shear stress. It offers the aesthetics of vegetation combined with better performance than traditional hard armor.
