Tonkawa Dam at Hilltop Lakes
The Tonkawa Dam in Hilltop Lakes, TX is part of a string of spring fed lakes within the community. The existing dam had a deteriorating steel bulkhead which compromised the dams integrity. With the increased population density and this being a recreational area with boat and personal craft traffic, the dam became more critical. The repair needed to not only perform well but also be aesthetically pleasing. The engineer proposed several options with HydroTurf® being selected by the HOA due to its natural look and ease of maintenance.
This installation was challenged by an extremely wet season. Not only did the water need to be lowered, but the installation needed to be completed quickly. In the end, HydroTurf provided little disruption to the community and an aesthetically pleasing product that easily blends with the surrounding environment.
Overtopping of dams can lead to failure, potentially causing significant downstream damage including loss of life and property.
