The Southeastern Wood Preserving site conducted wood-treating operations from 1928 to 1979.   Wood treating operations utilized coal tar, creosote and pentachlorophenol as wood preservatives.  The EPA listed the site on the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in March 2012 and worked with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to investigate site conditions in order to provide clean up to protect people and the environment from contamination. Located in southeast Mississippi, this project represents a major milestone in long-term environmental remediation.

The site required a permanent containment solution to address residual soil impacts and safeguard surrounding communities and water resources. To meet these challenges, the project implemented Watershed Geo’s ClosureTurf® system, an advanced engineered final cover designed to provide long-term protection with minimal maintenance.

Project Overview

More than 300,000 square feet of ClosureTurf® were installed to cap the site, using a 40-mil textured LLDPE geomembrane and durable synthetic turf designed to withstand extreme weather and hydraulic conditions.

Overcoming Historic Challenges

The site’s long industrial history posed unique environmental and design constraints. Traditional soil covers risked erosion, instability, and high maintenance costs. ClosureTurf® offered a modern alternative—simplifying installation, improving slope integrity, and significantly reducing groundwater infiltration and surface runoff concerns.

Long-Term Environmental Protection

By replacing a conventional soil cap with the ClosureTurf® system, the Southeastern Wood Preserving site achieved a durable, low-maintenance closure that protects both people and the environment. The system minimizes ongoing maintenance, eliminates the need for re-vegetation, and will provide superior erosion control for decades to come.

Sustainable Results

The completed cap ensures that surrounding neighborhoods and water supplies remain safe from future contamination risks. The site has been stabilized and transformed into a secure, sustainable landscape—demonstrating how innovative closure technologies like ClosureTurf® can deliver lasting protection and environmental peace of mind.
