Challenge 

As Rhode Island’s last municipally owned landfill, the Tiverton Landfill reached its final closure in 2022 after extending operations two years beyond its anticipated closing date. The Town of Tiverton needed a proven, long-term closure solution for the 21.9-acre site that would minimize installation time, reduce ongoing maintenance costs, and eliminate challenges associated with traditional vegetated covers. 

Solution  

Building on the proven performance of ClosureTurf® at other landfills throughout Rhode Island, the Town of Tiverton selected the engineered closure system for Phases I–IV of its final closure. Unlike traditional vegetated caps, ClosureTurf® eliminates the need for additional cover soil, allowing for faster installation while reducing truck traffic and transportation-related safety risks.

By eliminating the need for mowing and reducing erosion-related maintenance, the system significantly lowers ongoing maintenance requirements and associated costs.
