The MSW landfill site in Petersburg, VA—known as the Tri-City Landfill—was closed in two phases using the ClosureTurf® system. Due to the site’s complex geometry, ClosureTurf was a viable solution capable of addressing challenges such as limited access and steep slopes.
Located in a densely commercial and urban area along the Appomattox River, the ClosureTurf final cover system offers an aesthetically appealing appearance suited for an urban setting. In addition, the technical performance benefits include minimizing leachate, producing cleaner stormwater runoff, minimizing erosion, and eliminating trucks needed to import soil for a traditional soil cover.
During the installation period, the site experienced both rain and snow—conditions that often hinder traditional cover systems by eroding soil and subgrade layers. However, because the first component of the ClosureTurf system is a protective liner, it shields the underlying materials from weather-related damage and rework. This allows construction to resume more quickly after weather events, keeping the project on schedule.
