This MSW Landfill site in Petersburg, VA was closed in three phases using ClosureTurf®. Due to it’s complex geometry, ClosureTurf was the only option that could successfully solve the array of issues involved in the closing of this landfill.
Tri-City landfill is located in a heavily commercial and urban area next to the Appomattox river in Virginia. Leachate from the landfill needed to be reduced in order to preserve the water quality of this river that is recreationally used for boating and fishing. The ClosureTurf final cover system reduces leachate and provides cleaner water runoff from the landfill. ClosureTurf also provided an aesthetically pleasing solution for this urban area.
In addition to it’s difficult geometry, this site has extremely steep slopes which would lead to erosion issues with a traditional vegetated cover. These slopes also make it easier to get compaction during closure. However, the ClosureTurf is able to effectively withstand the greater than 3:1 slopes in this landfill, solving any potential erosion issues.
During the months that ClosureTurf was installed, the area experienced both rain and snow. Weather can be a challenge while installing a traditional cover because it can cause erosion of the dirt or underlying subgrade. However, because the liner is the first of the three-component ClosureTurf system to be installed, it protects the soil and underlying subgrade from weather incidents during the installation process, and construction can sooner resume following weather events.
